Overcoming Fear and Worry

If you ask the majority of people why they have not achieved a goal or reached the level of success they dream of the usual response is some built-in excuse (negative belief) that is holding them back. Now, it could definitely be legitimate circumstances, other responsibilities that took precedence, but generally underlying the excuse or negative belief is fear or worry.

How many times have you attempted something new, only to stop before you ever got started because you were afraid of what others may think?  Or you don’t think you have the time or money or both?  Or because you believe you are inexperienced or lack the knowledge to succeed?

Here, present! Starting this blog, restarting my business has definitely brought out the fear and worry so you are not alone!

The definition of F.E.A.R. has been coined False Evidence Appearing Real, which means we have chosen to believe in something that is not true.  But because it is our belief, it is our reality.  Worry is nothing more than a sustained fear caused by indecision. Sometimes we need to ask some tough questions to bring awareness to the negative thoughts that cause these worries or fears. Once the fear is identified, a few simple steps can be used to take charge overcome that fear.

The first step is to clearly define and write down what you are afraid of, or worried about. Half of your worries and fears can be solved the instant you acknowledge and define them clearly, by putting them on paper.  What you may have inflated in your mind will look small and insignificant once written down.

Step two.  Ask yourself, what is the worst possible thing that can happen if this fear or worry becomes true?  Make a list of each scenario you have made up and keep writing down everything that comes to mind until you have identified the worst possible outcome.

So now let me ask you a question. Do you realize that 90% of what we worry about never happens?  And that you have debilitated yourself for no real legitimate reason? Think about how much time you spend on worrying about stuff that never will happen.  This list will help you see that.

Once you have completed your list, resolve in your mind that you will accept the worst possible thing that can happen.  Since 90% of those things will never occur and generally the other 10% will not kill you, realize you will survive.  Accept the worst possible thing by telling yourself, I GOT THIS, over and over again.  Once you shift your mindset things will start to turn around.

Finally, put together an action plan of exactly what you need to do to turn things around.  By refocusing on positive changes and implementing your action plan, you will shift to the positive outcomes and away from your fears. You will begin to feel better because you are taking action, feeling the fear, and doing it anyways! Positive, consistent action is the only cure for fear and worry.  The list has helped me to step out of comfort zone and I am overcoming fear daily.  It’s an on-going process of growth, taken one day at a time.

WE GOT THIS!

Let me know if you have tried the steps and how they work for you. Share in the comments what other techniques you use to overcome fear and worry.
